Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, (1707-1788) directed the Royal Garden of Plants for nearly fifty years. from 1739 until his death: his Natural History, in 36 illustrated volumes, was a success from the moment it was published. The animal representations contained in the work have served as a source of inspiration for fine arts, fashion, decoration, educational works and books for young people.
